Turrican now available for iOS

turrican
Turrican is one of the most popular games on the Commodore 64 and Amiga. The game and its sequels made their way to a multitude of platforms before dropping off the face of the earth in the mid 1990s.

Those desperate for a quick portable Turrican fix can now get it on their iDevice. Elite Systems has released an iOS port of the popular C64 shooter Turrican. It’s a universal app and will set you back just $AU1.99.

It’s an emulated version of the game featuring touch screen controls, save states and some information on the history of Turrican.

Taxman and Stealth behind Sonic the Hedgehog mobile remaster

Sega announced at GDC that a remastered version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog would be making its way to Android and iOS devices. This new version of the game will replace the one that is currently available.

Previous Sonic the Hedgehog releases earned the ire of fans for being done as fast and as cheap as possible, so in order to prevent fan backlash, Sega has enlisted the help of Taxman, creator of the Retro Engine used in many Sonic fan games and the recent re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, and Stealth, creator of the popular Sonic fan game Sonic Mega Mix.

Changes in the new release include widescreen support, a remapped HUD and touch screen controls.

The remastered version of Sonic the Hedgehog will hit in April for $US2.99. Those who previously purchased Sonic the Hedgehog on these devices will be upgraded to the new version free of charge.

Vectrex compilation coming soon to iPad and iPhone

The Vectrex is an insanely cool piece of kit – you really need to see one in person to understand the magic. For those of you who don’t know anyone with a Vectrex, you’ll be able to test out a number of the system’s games in the near future when Vectrex Regeneration hits the App Store for the iPad and iPhone.

Vectrex Regeneration will include all 19 official Vectrex releases, with plans to include a number of popular homebrew titles under way. The app will also boast leaderboards and support for the popular iCade peripheral.

Obviously some of the magic is going to be lost due to the way the Vectrex screen works, but if you’re looking to test out the system’s games before taking the plunge, this app might be right up your alley.

Bizarre Creations’ Fur Fighters now on iPad

One of Bizarre Creations’ less successful releases was Fur Fighters for the Dreamcast (and later PS2 as Fur Fighters: Viggo’s Revenge) – a solid third person shooter which replaced your usual soldier types with a variety of woodland creatures.

For reasons unknown, a group of former Bizarre staff (under the guise of Muffin Games) have released an updated version of the game for the iPad, entitled Fur Fighters: Viggo on Glass. It’s currently listed for $US1.99.
