Video Game Ad of the Day: Breath of Fire

by on Apr.29, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire is the first in a series of five RPGs developed and published by Capcom. Players take control of a boy named Ryu, the last of a race who have the ability to transform into dragons. The difference in the way the characters are presented in the promotional material and packaging in comparison to the game should provide for some amusement.

Capcom’s Dungeons & Dragons brawlers to be re-released

by on Mar.23, 2013, under News

Capcom has announced that they will be releasing the two classic Dungeons & Dragons arcade beat ’em ups, Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara to Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, WiiU eShop and PCs in June.

The games will be released together in a pack called Chronicles of Mystara. Enhancements include the usual “HD” filters and drop-in/drop-out online multiplayer for up to four players. The pack has been developed by Iron Galaxies, who were responsible for Marvel vs. Capcom: Origins and Darkstalkers Resurrection.

Previously the only way to play these games at home was to track down the Japanese Saturn release, which could be a pricey endeavour.

by on Mar.23, 2013, under News

Capcom and WayForward announced today that they will be producing a new DuckTales game for release on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and WiiU eShop later this year.

Entitled DuckTales Remastered, the game is heavily inspired by the pair of DuckTales games Capcom developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System in the early 1990s.

Capcom: bring back the Moon theme and we’ll forgive you for taking 20 years to do this.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Final Fight

by on Mar.04, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Final Fight SFC JP
Final Fight is one of the most popular beat ’em ups of all time, revolutionising the genre upon first release in 1989. The SNES/Super Famicom release is a bit watered down – Guy has been removed, it’s single player only, and outside of Japan, the game is rife with censorship imposed by (then) the overly conservative Nintendo of America.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Resident Evil Code: Veronica

by on Mar.03, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Resident Evil Code Veronica
Resident Evil: Code Veronica is one of the bright lights of the Dreamcast library. It was the first mainline Resident Evil game not to debut on the PlayStation, and the first to abandon pre-rendered backdrops – though it keeps the fixed perspective camera.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Street Fighter Alpha 3

Street Fighter Alpha 3 PSX USA
Don’t let the Game Informer quote fool you – the PlayStation version of Alpha 3 is far from perfection. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad, it’s just that the Saturn and Dreamcast ports were that much better.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight

by on Feb.19, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Street Fighter 2010 JP
It seems like every franchise has a bizarre misstep – Street Fighter is no exception. Street Fighter 2010 is only vaguely related to the world’s most popular fighting game series – perhaps in name only. The localised version of Street Fighter 2010 saw the character’s name changed from Kevin to Ken, along with heavy implication that he’s Ken Masters.

Demo of the restored version of Resident Evil 1.5 released!

by on Feb.19, 2013, under News

RE1.5
What’s Resident Evil 1.5 you say? Well, the story goes that about 70-80% through development, the producers of Resident Evil 2, Shinji Mikami and Hideki Kamiya, decided the game was too action oriented and not up to the high standard of the original game. So they started again.

That original version of Resident Evil 2, dubbed Resident Evil 1.5 by fans, has been the most wanted prototype on the PlayStation. Many have teased that they have a copy of the prototype, but aside from a couple of screenshots and videos, nobody has released a playable version.

Until now. The Resident Evil 1.5 restoration project is a rag tag group that managed to get a copy of the prototype and has since spent considerable time restoring it to a point where it can be enjoyed by all. Today they released a playable demo version marking the first time the public will get a taste of this mythical beta.

Of course, the project still continues – apparently the in-development version is quite a bit further along than this demo. The demo release was prompted by someone attempting to sell the team’s work to date on eBay; originally the team had intended only to release their work once it was completed.

You can get the demo here.

Ruby Spears promo video shows completely different Mega Man cartoon

by on Feb.09, 2013, under News

Recently on our YouTube channel, we posted a video of the introduction to the 1995 Ruby Spears Mega Man cartoon. That series ran for two seasons, and tends to receive mixed feelings from fans whenever it’s brought up.

However, as the following video will show, the original plan for the show was way different.

The above video shows that the original plan for the cartoon was much more directly influenced by the Japanese interpretation of the character, showing off a version of the show that’s a lot more anime-like than the final product. Given that this promo video was boasting a 1994 date for the show, we can presume that it was all delayed for a year so that they could retool Mega Man to be what they thought would be more appealing to a North American audience.
