What are you playing at the moment?

Postby Matt » Mon Jun 13, 2011 5:13 pm

Same as the retro forum version of the topic - let us know what you're playing at the moment and what you think of it!

I'm currently working my way through Duke Nukem Forever (360 version) and Infamous 2 (PS3). I'm enjoying Duke for what it is, even though it feels a bit rough and somewhat dated. I'd like to play through it again on the PC one day. Infamous 2 is okay - I don't like the UGC missions and they've turned the main character into a bit of a douche, but the rest of the game is pretty good.

Also threw Just Cause 2 in for a bit of fun last night - might go for 100% in that one day. Might take a lifetime to do so, though.

I'm currently playing too many games at once. It is getting hard to keep track of where I'm up to.

L.A. Noire PS3
I started this on release, but uni exams and such sort of distracted me. I'm really enjoying the game so far. I like that it is in some ways GTAesque, but I get to be a good guy. I think the interrogations work well, and I enjoy piecing together all the evidence. The setting is established well too, with the attitudes of the characters, the cars, the clothes and the music really making it feel like I am in the 1940s.

3D Dot Game Heroes PS3
Great game. It feels so much like an old Zelda game, but all glossy and new. It started out nice and easy, but I'm currently on the fifth dungeon and it is definitely starting to get more challenging.

Pokemon White NDS
Same ol' Pokemon really, with a combination of good and bad changes. The C-Gear stuff is rubbish, but the new Pokemon are cute and Poke Marts and Poke Centers are all in one now. It is taking me a little longer to finish this game, so I guess that means I liked Soul Silver quite a bit more.

Ghost Trick NDS
Quirky and unique gameplay, and an intriguing storyline. You play as a ghost that can interact with your surroundings to change the fate of certain characters and uncover the events of your death. I find this game really fun, but also stressful to play - not quite as stressful as Trauma Center though.

The Legendary Starfy NDS
Too cute and really fun. It has been pretty easy so far, but I'm only in the first world. It is nice to play a 2D platformer that doesn't make me want to rage quit (ala Donkey Kong Country Returns).

Pilotwings Resort 3DS
My favorite 3DS game so far. I loved Pilotwings for SNES and N64, and this 3DS iteration is pretty good. I wasn't disappointed, which says a lot considering I was over excited for its release. It controls really well, but I generally have to play with the 3D off because moving the 3DS around while flying tends to move the system out of its 3D sweet spot for me.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 360
Not as good as the other HP games I have played. It is combat driven and plays like a shooter (obviously due to the nature of the last book/movies), and even in easy mode I'm getting stuck (due to my skill level, not the game itself). I'm not really enjoying playing it yet, but I'm hoping it gets better.

I'm currently playing Lunar: Silver Star Harmony for PSP.

I have never played a Lunar game before, despite really wanting to. The game is definitely not disappointing me. L:SSH looks gorgeous, the music is lovely and the story line is intriguing enough (but seems to be the standard RPG fare). The battle system is turn based, with no direct control of character movements on the battlefield. Unfortunately, there isn't much variety in the monsters you come across in each area so battles get quite repetitive.

Game is lush.

Just finished up the original Scribblenauts. Gets a tad more frustrating towards the end due to the fiddly control system.

Moved onto Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles now.

I recently finished Rayman Origins, Lord of the Rings: War in the North and Final Fantasy XIII-2, all of which I enjoyed immensely.

Currently, I'm playing Tales of Graces f and bouts of Boom Street and Dr. Mario.

Tales of Graces f is standard Tales fare, which is A-okay with me. I have found myself a tad more title obsessed than in other Tales games, though. Having a lot of fun.

Boom Street is so addictive. It is basically Monopoly with stock trading and some Mario and Dragon Quest characters. I love all the familiar settings and music of the famous franchises, and am enjoying both single and multiplayer games. The series has been around for some time, but this is the first title to make it outside Japan. Many people liken the gameplay to Mario Party, but I disagree. Sure there are Mario characters and settings and it is a board game video game, but it lacks the mini-game aspects that are so key to the Mario Party franchise. Boom Street is a more slower paced game, where strategy is much more important.

I'm currently playing Eternal Sonata on the Xbox360. I have had this game since the beginning of 2008, and I'm ashamed to admit this is my first time playing it.

It really is a beauty, and it has a really active turn-based battle system that is a lot of fun. One of the must play RPGs of this gen.

Have beaten Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and Binary Domain in the last month. Kirby and Binary Domain were excellent, the others not so much.

Now playing Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce and Crysis 2.

I recently got involved in the Summer Backlog Challenge on YouTube, and have thus been playing through a few games with the intention to complete my selected 5 games from my gaming backlog by July 9 (the official end date is September 30).

I played through Heavy Rain for PS3. It was quite an experience, but I won't say it was fun because I was a nervous wreck the whole time. The Move controls made it easier to play than when I first tried playing the game on release (glitches made me put it down). I don't really get the whole 'interactive movie' criticism of Heavy Rain, I felt very much in control of how my story was playing out and I was jumping about like an idiot to interact with it.

I also played through Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth for NDS. It is the fifth game released in the Ace Attorney series and is a point and click adventure. You move Mr. Edgeworth, a prosecutor, around environments to collect evidence during your investigation, listen to witness accounts/testimony and engage in rebuttals which has you looking for contradictions much like Cross-Examination in previous Ace Attorney games. New to the series is the Logic system. You gather pieces of logic while investigating and during rebuttal and connect these pieces of logic to draw conclusions and unlock more evidence. It is a challenging game, but also a lot of fun. The characters are really quirky too. I found Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth to be a bit easier than the first four games in the series.

I'm currently playing Kirby's Epic Yarn. This game is so fun! Fun and adorable. Fun, adorable and charming. I love the role yarn and fabric plays in the games mechanics, the levels are easy so far but a treat to play through, everything controls well and the boss fights are creative. With Kirby's usual abilities rendered useless because he is now made of yarn, he uses a whip to take care of enemies and can transform into various items and creatures such as a car, tank, dolphin etc. - this is pretty cool! It is now one of my favourite Wii games. <3

I'm currently addicted to playing Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. I'm obsessively unlocking everything I can, and have spent $7 (so far) on additional songs.

^ I'm still playing Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.

I'm also playing Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure 3DS and just finished Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland PS3.

Rhythm Thief is Professor Layton x Doctor Lautrec x Rhythm Heaven x Bust a Groove. It is a lot of fun, and quite challenging at times.

Atelier Rorona reminded me of Harvest Moon and FFCC: My Life as King with some turn-based battles and item gathering included, and a huge focus on Alchemy. You are given a 4 missions a year for 3 years in game time, and your success in these missions (mostly 'create this') determines whether you save the Alchemy Workshop. There is friendship building and events that also influence the games ending. The game is super easy, and I loved it.

I have been playing a lot of games recently, as I received a great many video games for Christmas and my birthday.

I have played through Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! (3DS), Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion (3DS), Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (3DS) and Lost Odyssey (360).

Lost Odyssey has fast become one of my most favourite games. The 3DS games were all fun, Adventure Time was excellent.

I'm currently playing Pokemon White Version 2 (DS), Enchanted Folk and the School of Wizardry (DS) and Anarchy Reigns (360).

I'm really enjoying White 2, more so than the first Pokemon White. I'm honestly not sure why though. Collecting medals (read: achievements) is a nice addition, but I'm seeing no other significant changes yet.

Enchanted Folk is Animal Crossing x Harry Potter, essentially. It isn't entirely clear on what the player should be doing and doesn't really explain the games systems well enough - but I'm only right at the start of the game so perhaps a little bit of guidance is coming forthwith.

Anarchy Reigns isn't capturing me. The combat is fun, but the games structure is lacking. Multiplayer might be redeeming, but I haven't tried it yet.
